When You Wish: The Story Of Walt Disney at Phoenix Theatre

Why see When You Wish: The Story Of Walt Disney?

Once upon a time, there was a humble animator....

Long before the recognisable mouse ears became a global symbol for the magic of Disney, Walt himself started from humble beginnings as an animator. But it was his innovative ideas that revolutionised animated cartoons, from combining live actors and cartoon figures and the use of synchronised music in the action sequences. However, these ideas were often dismissed as faddy by the production executives where he worked. This charming 2013 musical biopic that premiered in Los Angeles depicts Walt's frustrating struggles to be taken seriously during his early years, but ultimately pointing him towards the path of cultural immortality.

Combining song and dance within the narrative lifts the show from a simple retelling of the early years, but provides a refreshing warts-and-all insight into the Man behind the Mouse, whether it be his aggravating lack of business acumen that put him at odds with his brother Roy, or his artistic drive that often distanced him from his wife Lilian and their young family. The production is further enhanced with the use of background projections of his animated characters interacting with real actors, giving the show a fitting sense of whimsy.

With original songs created for this production including "Always A Wolf At The Door" "Mickey Who," and "Someone In Love", this fresh look at the struggling artist behind the legend will leave audiences with a deeper appreciation for Disney's work and determination to succeed. And boy, did he succeed!
